WASHINGTON (ABC7) — Do you know what mumbo sauce is? If not, you're missing out on a large part of DC culture, history, and flavor. At the center of it is a woman who is bringing mumbo sauce to the masses, and fighting through a tragic loss at the same time.
We begin at Hong Kong Delight Carryout along MLK Avenue in Southeast DC, where Harold Morris has wings and fries smothered in that bright orange, tangy-sweet topping called mumbo sauce.
It's been a DC staple since the 1950s.
“Their mumbo sauce is sweet, it's good, like finger-licking' good!”
At the Capital City Company in Annapolis, Arsha Jones is the mumbo sauce expert.
“Our product and mumbo sauce in DC deserves the same respect as Old Bay seasoning in Maryland or cheesesteaks in Philly," says Jones.
Jones came up with the recipe for Capital City Mambo Sauce while she was pregnant with her fourth son.
